As part of the awareness-raising process, games (and roleplays in particular) are attractive and instructive ways of getting people involved and of generating empathy. They allow you to put participants in the shoes of migrants, forcing them to experience the challenges and difficulties that migrants face in their own country, during the migration journey, and on their arrival in Europe.
From theory to practice
Structure your game
To build a role-play or game on migration, you should plan with attention all the steps and interactions, to make it engaging and meaningful.
You can browse methodologies and ideas in a series of online resources:
- Passages, by UNHCR, guides you through the creation of an awareness game on refugees
- Border Control Role Play by Amnesty International provides a script to hold a role-play on the immigration path
- On the move: a refugee simulation activity provides detailed instructions to develop and adapt such activities
